Softball

Bishop Guertin 8, Concord 6

Key players: Concord – Bailey Cassin (4.1 IP in relief, 0 H, 8 K), Maggie Taylor (3 hits), Avery MacDonald (2 hits), Andie Moreira (2 hits), Jaylyn Wessling (2 hits), Kiley Taylor (2 hits, 2 walks), Anna Leon (first varsity hits), Natalee Rowell (first varsity hit)

Highlights: The Tide outhit the Cardinals, 14-7, but BG’s seven runs in the first inning was too much for Concord to overcome. Cassin shut down the Cardinals in relief, but the Tide left a runner on base in every inning and left the tying run at the plate. Taylor reached base all four times in her first varsity game.

Key players: Hopkinton – Ella-Mai Johnson (7 IP, 6 H, 7 K, 2 BB; RBI single), Zoey Freitas (2-for-4, double), Ayla Royce (2-for-3, double, RBI, run; RF)

Highlights: Hopkinton’s bats were slow to start, but the Hawks got on the board in the fourth inning thanks to back-to-back singles by Paige Boudette and Gemma Guadagno. Royce drove in a run and later scored on a single by Johnson. Hopkinton made contact with the ball late in the game, but couldn’t produce more runs.

Highlights: The pitching trio of Star Henion, Lexi Shaughnessy and Richard combined 10 strikeouts and six hits allowed in seven innings, but the Cougars couldn’t generate any runs in a season-opening loss to the Wildcats.

Coach’s quote: “Was great to finally get to play outside. We have a young team and most girls were playing in their first high school softball game. Baseball

Bishop Guertin 10, Concord 0, 6 inn.

Key players: Concord – Cam Burbank (hit), Isaac Vaillancourt and Kale Washburn (pitched well in relief)

Highlights: Concord had its only hit in the top of the first and the Cardinals scored four times in the bottom of the first to take the lead early. BG plated two more in the bottom of the second. Vaillancourt pitched well in relief, but the Cardinals scored two more in the bottom of the fifth and a pair in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early.

Coach’s quote: “First varsity game for a lot of our team. We did some positive things, but have a lot of work to do. Was proud of how we competed and were able to stay in the game after going down 6-0 after two (innings). Back to it at practice tomorrow.” – Concord’s Scott Owen

Hollis-Brookline 3, Bow 1

Key players: Bow – Dillan Abbate (1-for-3), Clayton Nadzan (1-for-3, double)

Highlights: The Cavaliers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie. Hollis-Brookline held the Falcons to just two hits, while getting four of its own.

Belmont 12, Prospect Mountain 2

Key players: Belmont – Wyatt Divers (6 IP, 1 BB, 9 K, 2 R; 3-for-4, triple, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs, SB); Owen Waldron (4-for-4, double, RBI, 4 runs, 2 SB), Anakin Underhill (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 SB), Michael Collette (1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K; 1-for-4, double, 3 RBI, walk, run), Jack Crockford (1-for-1, first varsity hit, RBI, run)

Highlights: Belmont collected 14 hits as a team, scoring two runs in the first inning and five in the third to take a big lead early. The Raiders scored four runs in the seventh to cap their scoring.

Key players: Bishop Brady – Dan Shedd (5 IP, 10 K, 3 BB, 1 H; triple, run), Winn Thomas (3 hits, 2 RBI, 2 runs, SB), Max Guerra (hit, 3 RBI), Jack Speiss (3 hits, double, 2 RBI), Owen Thornton (2 runs)

Highlights: Shedd pitched a 5-inning shutout, leading the Giants to an opening day victory at Rollins Park. Brady scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a throwing error and an RBI single from Thomas, scoring John McKerley. Brady added a single tally in the third on a triple by Shedd, who scampered home when Newport overthrew the cutoff man. After scoring three more in the fourth, Brady plated four more in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Guerra hit a 2-run single and Speiss had an RBI double to put the 10-run rule into effect.

Coach’s quote: “After some initial control issues in the first, Dan settled down nicely and gave us a quality start. It took us a little bit to get the bats going today, but it is always nice to start the season with a win.” – Bishop Brady’s Skip Foy

Conant 8, Hopkinton 1

Key players: Hopkinton – Nate Windhurst (1-for-2, double, walk), Cody Charron (single, run), Mike DePiano (3 IP, 2 H, 3 UER, 3 BB, 3 K; RBI), Devin Allen (1-for-2, single, sacrifice bunt)

Highlights: Windhurst got the Hawks off to a hot start, roping a double to deep left, but was unfortunately left at second. In the second, Hopkinton plated the first run of the game on a Charron base hit, Tad Stokes walk, Allen sac bunt, and then DePiano tallied an RBI scoring Charron on a grounder to first base. Conant answered in the third inning with three unearned runs and continued to add onto its lead with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two runs in the seventh.

Coach's quote: “We left 10 Hawk runners on-base with eight of them in scorning position, so the ability to get on against solid pitching was great to see. We have to work on finding ways to get these runners across the plate. Full confidence in this group to do just that.” – Hopkinton’s Kevin Hill

Key players: Winnisquam – Carter Lloyd (2.2 IP, 4 R, 3 ER; 2-for-2, run, reached base 3 times), John Shea (3.1 IP in relief, 1 H, 1 R, 4 K), Nik Puffinburger (RBI single)

Highlights: The Bears trailed 4-0 after three innings, but scored two runs in the fourth inning and had the tying runs on base with one out. Winnisquam couldn’t get the big hit it needed to tie the game and struck out 14 times.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Highlights: Pembroke had six different goal scorers, led by Purtell’s hat trick.

Kearsarge 12, ConVal 3

Key players: Kearsarge – Nadia Spiegel (6 goals), Ociee Ilg (4 goals), Addyson Rossi (goal), Meadow Chase (goal), Tori Wooten (defense), Ella Dumais (midfield)

Highlights: Without the benefit of any pre-season scrimmages, Kearsarge had control of the game early, leading 6-1 at halftime and extending the lead in the second half despite more competitive third and fourth quarters.

Girls’ Tennis

Salem 9, Concord 0

Key players: Concord – Madie Mikkelsen and Malia Moffett (8-3 loss at No. 1 doubles)

Highlights: Mikkelsen and Moffett had the closest match of the day on Friday, with most of the other matches ending in 8-2 or 8-1 scores.

Kingswood 6, Bow 3

Key players: Bow – Makaylie Laws (8-3 win at No. 2), Lilly Gula (8-6 win at No. 3), Gula and Sierra Scull (win at No. 2 doubles)

Highlights: With their top player on a college visit, each Falcon moved up one spot in the lineup. Laws rallied from an early deficit to win her match at No. 2 singles, while Gula won both her singles and doubles matches to lead Bow. Freshmen Alexis Pelletier and Grace DeCosta nearly made up a four-game deficit, but ultimately fell at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.

Coach’s quote: “It was a fun match because not only were many of the matches so close, but there were many deuces within each game. Some of our youngsters gained a lot of experience and confidence from their play today.” – Bow’s Steve Langevin

Hollis-Brookline 6, Pembroke 3

Key players: Pembroke – Rileyanne Caron (8-6 win at No. 5), Caron and Brianna Larochelle (8-4 win at No. 3 doubles), Kaylie Reynolds and Lily Russell (8-3 win at No. 3 doubles)

Highlights: The Cavaliers secured the victory by winning five of six singles matches, but the Spartans outplayed Hollis-Brookline in doubles. Caron continued her impressive streak to open the season, remaining undefeated in doubles and winning all but one of her singles matches so far.

Boys’ Tennis

Highlights: The Cougars extended their undefeated streak with a victory on the road against the Saints.
