A structure fire that destroyed a building on rural Chase Farm Road in Hopkinton spread to surrounding brush and fields as crews scrambled Monday afternoon to keep the flames from spreading.

The blaze at 100 Chase Farm Road was called around 3 p.m. and drew firefighters from around the area, including Hopkinton, Henniker, Concord, Hooksett, Canterbury, Bow, Boscawen, Salisbury, Webster and Warner, among others.

Hopkinton Fire Chief Jeff Yale said a garage or barn was destroyed by the flames and it was unclear if anyone was living inside. No one was hurt, he said.

“This was well involved, which sparked all these brush fires around,” Yale said.

The fire spread across several acres in the field up the hill and down across the road from Chase Farm, which elevated the response to a third alarm.

“We probably have about another second alarm operations happening out back here right now,” Yale said about the extent of the spreading flames Monday.

The area of Hopkinton is close to the town line with Webster. Firefighters used tanker trucks and water from the Blackwater River to douse the flames.

Early spring is usually a time of high risk for wildfires in New Hampshire because trees have not yet produced leaves that provide shade, so the ground dries out quickly on sunny days, and because it’s often breezy, which can spread flames quickly.
