The Shaw’s supermarket in Fort Eddy Plaza is slated to close, although its sister store on Loudon Road next to Steeplegate Mall will stay open.
The company said in a statement Wednesday that the Fort Eddy Plaza store and a Shaw’s in Gloucester, Mass., would shut as part of a realignment of the company. No timeline was given.
Shaw’s has 25 stores in New Hampshire, including locations in Hooksett and Laconia, according to its website. Its parent company, Albertsons, tried to merge with Kroger last year as part of a $26 billion agreement but the plan was rejected in two courts.
The Fort Eddy store is across the street from a Hannaford’s supermarket and next to one of the three Market Basket supermarkets in Concord.
The closure of the 67,000- square-foot Shaw’s will empty the plaza’s anchor position at a time when two other spaces are empty. The grocery store is roughly the size of the plaza’s two bigger tenants, Staples and Books-A-Million, combined.
The shopping center was bought in 2022 by Torrington Properties, which owns a number of other retail locations in New Hampshire, for a reported $30 million. It was sold by Eddy Plaza Associates LLC, a family company that has owned the property since it was built in 1979.
If you think Conc ord has a lot of grocery stores, you’re right, it does, but it’s far from the top of the food chain.
Counting stores that sell a complete range of food and grocery items, including Wal-Mart but not counting small independents, Concord has eight grocery stores, which will fall to seven once the second Shaw’s closes. Bedford, which is a little bit more than half the size of Concord, has five grocery stores. On a per capita basis, Bedford remains the food capital of New Hampshire.
