On several occasions President Trump has reminded us that he survived this past year’s assassination attempt as the result of divine intervention. “It was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening,” he’s said. At the inauguration, he told us “I was saved by God to make America great.”

Presumably, this is the same God that Trump would agree is the one and only creator of our universe and all that is in it: plants, animals, the oceans, mountains, and all of mankind, male and female, whether white, black, brown, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim or Hindu. Aren’t they all creatures of that one God? Tall, short, blind, deaf, autistic, disabled, conjoined — all children of that one Creator. Native-born, immigrant, straight, gay, transgender — oops, according to Trump, and to all too many others who profess an unswerving belief in that creator God, there are exceptions. So, laws must be passed. And if we think about it, there may well be other categories that could be added to the list. It has happened before. It could very easily happen here. In fact, it is happening now.
