A Pelham man has been charged as the getaway driver in a hit-and-run boat crash that occurred on Lake Winnipesaukee last August.

Eight months after a 50-foot Sea Ray crashed into a dock in Wolfeboro’s Winter Harbor, State Police have arrested 69-year-old Demosthenes Macheras for escorting the operator and passengers of the Sea Ray from the scene. State Police have not announced any other arrests related to the incident.

The crash occurred around 11 p.m. on Aug. 12, destroying a permanent dock and a wooden boat parked there. Abandoning the Sea Ray, which came to a halt atop rocks near shore, the driver and operators were picked up in a 1997 blue Well Craft, which police later found docked at a Tuftonboro residence.

Property records show Macheras owns a waterfront home on the Tuftonboro side of Winter Harbor.

Investigators had been trying to locate Macheras for “several weeks,” according to a spokesperson for State Police. He was taken into custody Friday morning with the help of the Pelham Police Department.

State police said last year the large Sea Ray, also dark blue, is registered to a Windham resident but have not released any other updates about the investigation, which is going, since.

Macheras has been charged with simple assault and hindering apprehension and is scheduled to appear in Ossipee District Court court on June 4.
