A body recovered from Casco Bay at the end of July has been positively identified by the Maine Medical Examiner as 31-year-old Bow native Edward Berke.

Berke, an alumnus of Bow High School, was on a boating trip with three others when the Coast Guard received a distress call around 8 p.m. on July 4 reporting Berke had fallen overboard near Clapboard Island.

On July 26, the Maine Marine Patrol reported that a recreational fisherman discovered a body in the water near the south end of Chebeague Island, which is near where Berke had been reported missing.

The Coast Guard deployed a 47-foot lifeboat and a helicopter to initiate the search. After several days, the search was called off.

The Berke family remembered “Eddie” for his adventurous spirit, his knack for listening to others and his ability to make friends.

The medical examiner confirmed Berke’s identity on Tuesday.
