No. 1 Newport 5, No. 8 Hopkinton 1
Highlights: The Hawks played well, but a few key misplays in the field opened the door for the undefeated Tigers in Saturday’s quarterfinal. With two outs in the second, a misplayed fly ball allowed Newport to stay at bat and the next batter hit a two-run home run. The Hawks got one back in the third off a single by Skylar Clay and an errant throw that went into the outfield. The Tigers kept the Hopkinton off balance by using two pitchers and working high in the zone.
Coach’s quote: “Newport is a great team. We had to be cleaner today on defense and we gave them the opportunities they needed. We had a good season especially after an 0-5 start. All the players should be proud of the way they battled back from that to reach the quarters.” – Hopkinton’s Liz Kovar
Records: Newport 17-0; Hopkinton 10-8
