Nature must be in cahoots with New Hampshire Tourism because this is looking like a perfect stretch of days for making maple syrup in preparation for New Hampshire Maple Weekend.
Sugar maples need below-freezing nights and above-freezing days for their sap to run up and down the tree and be available for collecting – which is exactly what is in store through Friday for the Concord region. As an added bonus, snow levels in the woods have shrunk enough to minimize obstruction of equipment, but there’s still enough of it to ensure that the woods get cold enough at night.
The net result is that sugar houses, which boil down the sap to make syrup, will have all that they can handle this weekend when they open their doors to the public.
