Letter: Money for NH schools, not border

The governor has asked for $850,000 to help address “border issues” over 2,000 miles away. I would remind supporters of this ill-advised proposal that the U.S. Senate recently passed bipartisan legislation that would have provided $20 billion in money for the border, yet MAGA Republicans in the House didn’t even bring it to a vote. Here in New Hampshire, taxpayer money should be going to our completely under-funded university system.

For years, New Hampshire has had one of the worst records in the nation for support of higher education. Our beleaguered UNH has recently laid off faculty and staff and closed its art museum. The cost of attending UNH in-state is a whopping $19,000 while our Florida grandson attends the highly-rated U of Florida for one-third of that amount. We would do better here in New Hampshire to have less political posturing on the national stage and more attention paid to the public good right here at home.
