An ice climber was injured Sunday in an avalanche on Cannon Mountain as recent heavy snows have raised the danger level for avalanches throughout the White Mountains.

“Avalanche conditions are very dangerous. … Avalanches could run far into flat runout zones that previously seemed safe. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended,” says the Mount Washington Avalanche Center.

A 31-year old from Vermont who had been ice climbing on Cannon Cliffs with a 36-year old companion from Concord was carried away in an avalanche, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game. The companion called 911 and alerted first responders and was able to locate the man downslope, who was partially buried.

The man was injured but the two were able to make their way to the trail where they met volunteers from the Pemi Search and Rescue Team along with a conservation officer and members of the Cannon Mountain Ski Patrol at about 1:45 p.m. They were taken out in a snowmobile. The climber suffered an unknown injury, according to officials, and was driven to the hospital by his climbing partner after declining an ambulance.
