Police fatally shot a man armed with a rifle who barricaded himself inside the Federal House Inn on Route 25 Plymouth.

Both the New Hampshire State Police Crisis Negotiation Team and members of the SWAT unit responded to Plymouth Wednesday afternoon to provide assistance to local police, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office.

Police communicated with the man for several house before the SWAT Unit radioed at 12:49 a.m. early Thursday morning that they had fired upon the man.

The man was located near a first-floor doorway suffering from apparent gunshot wounds and pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident started about 2:40 p.m. on Wednesday, when Plymouth Police responded to the inn for a report of a disturbance. When they arrived they reported hearing what sounded like gunshots coming from inside.

“Police responded to the area following a disturbance call at the Inn Wednesday afternoon where they arrived to find the man armed and barricaded inside,” the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement. “Engagement with the barricaded male was ongoing at the time of the incident.”

Police rerouted traffic away from Route 25 while the man remained barricaded inside.

Police did not release the identity of the man who was killed or the names of the six SWAT Unit officers who shot him.
