Everyone inside a three-family apartment building that caught fire Saturday evening in Hillsborough was able to safely evacuate.

With waves of rain and snow bearing down, firefighters from eight area towns battled the blaze for nearly four hours before it was brought under control, according to Hillsborough Fire Chief Kenneth Stafford Jr.

“The weather hampered us,” Stafford said. “It was slow going.”

Hillsborough was dispatched to a fire on Myrtle Street just before 5:45 p.m. Saturday, according to Stafford. A second alarm was called, bringing firefighters from Concord, Henniker, Deering, Bradford, Bennington, Washington and Antrim to the scene. The fire continued until almost 8:30, Stafford said.

Each of the three apartments was occupied when the fire broke out, but all residents — at least six people and one cat, according to Stafford — safely exited the building and there were no injuries.

The fire is believed to have started on the building’s third floor and left some level of damage on each floor plus significant damage to the attic and roof. Its cause remains under investigation.
