Mental illness in youth populations is rising at a steady rate across the country in a generation that is prone to the influences of social media and cyberbullying.

On Wednesday, the Concord School District in partnership with the Concord Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a public event on how to talk to Concord youth about the effects and stigmas of mental health and available resources, according to a press release from CSD.

The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the City Wide Community Center on Canterbury Road in Concord. Food will be provided to those in attendance.

“It’s not really influenced by us seeing an increase in the district but more about seeing an increase in our general community,” said Bridget Edinger, executive assistant to the superintendent. “This is the first public event that we have hosted with the city on this topic.”

Parents, caregivers and community members will hear from Former Chief Justice John Broderick and children’s book author Irene Buchine, who will share their personal stories and discuss how they use their lived experiences to positively impact the lives of others by raising mental health awareness.

This event will have resources from and the support of Riverbend Community Mental Health, Friends Mentoring Program, Waypoint, Connor’s Climb, Family Health Center, Friends of Aine, Crisis Center of Central New Hampshire, Concord Parks & Rec, Concord Library, NAMI, Beyond the Meadows PLLC and Upreach: Resiliency Reins.
